DESCRIPTION

This project carries forward previous work conducted by Telvent Farradyne, Inc., sponsored by the I‐95 Corridor Coalition. The project will use intercity public carrier data provided by others in a format consistent with the Google Transit Feed Specification. The project will be managed by Resource Systems Group. There will be an advisory committee set up with stakeholders representing the I‐95 Corridor Coalition, interested State and local agencies, and the American Bus Association. Interested parties representing current information providing companies, such as Google, Yahoo or Microsoft would be invited to participate as observers. Management of the committee process will be undertaken by a separate subcontractor, (Mr. Coogan) in cooperation with other consultants to the I‐95 Corridor Coalition, in a manner consistent with existing practice.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project is to develop a prototype on‐line intercity public transportation trip planner for New England incorporating intercity bus and Amtrak service. As a beta version, the trip planner will focus on connecting points served by all long distance services in the region to major regional intermodal terminals, such as Boston South Station, the Springfield bus/rail complex, and terminal points in New York City (defined below.) Specific limitations of this beta trip planner are:

  • It will not support “rural‐to‐rural” trips. The system will be built to allow later expansion in functionality in any possible subsequent effort.
  • It will not provide trip planning services which have both origin and destination within any metropolitan area.
  • It will not be used by the public. Instead the prototype trip planner will be built to demonstrate the concept of integrated multimodal longer distance trip planning to interested parties at State Departments of Transportation, regional planning agencies, local transit operators, Amtrak and the private sector bus carriers represented by the American Bus Association.
