This project launched a two-year operational test focused on training and education using distance learning. The Coalition provided the seed money to fund the development of an initial set of ITS training and education courses. As the program developed, the curriculum was expanded to include additional courses and participants. The project was led by the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Transportation Technology. CITE was formed to accomplish the project and membership, at its inception, consisted of over 45 universities worldwide, ITS America, Federal Highway Administration, National Highway Institute, and Federal Transit Administration.
The use of web-based instruction allows students greater flexibility in incorporating training and education into a busy schedule. It is CITE’s goal to have all of the ITS courses developed by CITE available in whole or in part on a graduate level to students enrolling at any of its member universities. All courses will be available for continuing education units directly through CITE.
A pilot version of “Fundamentals of ITS and Traffic Management” course began in January 2000 with the final version provided in the summer of 2000. An “ITS Applications and Management” course was available in the fall of 2000. A series of training short courses were also developed that dealt with specific aspects of ITS technology and institutional practices. |
