Work to date on the trip planning portion of the program has suggested an approach where long distance trip segments are recommended separately from the short distance public transportation services that can be used to arrive at ultimate destinations. In this approach, local bus routes are indicated on a map that will provide descriptions of the location of bus routes in regions not covered by existing automated origin-destination trip itinerary planning programs. Each route displayed on the map would be hyperlinked to a local service provider, where schedules and route details would be provided. Under the Year 15 program, the Coalition is creating this transit inventory map for its 16-state region. An annual update of the database is needed to keep it current. A maintenance group would contact each of the roughly 220 transit agencies in the Coalition region and ask that its list of bus lines included in the Coalition’s inventory database be updated.

Funding is also needed to support assistance to states for which passenger information systems have been developed to deal with basic maintenance/improvement issues.

Funding is also needed to support the establishment of additional locally managed airport ground access traveler information system by providing the prototype software and by assisting in the establishment of the local capability by providing advice and software maintenance services.
