TITLECVO Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS)

PROJECT CODE8a-4A

COMMITTEECommercial Vehicle Operations

YEAR FUNDEDYear 8 - FY 2000

Year 8 Budget: $75,000

STATUSCanceled

DESCRIPTION

This project will leverage and build upon the current FleetForward (Field Operational Test #6) architecture to access, integrate, and deliver to motor carriers additional information sources and decision-support capabilities. The Field Operational Test is outlined in the Years 1-5 section of the Appendix to this Business Plan Update. Preliminary conclusions from the FleetForward research indicate the certain sectors within trucking realized significant utility from ATIS. These benefits included:

  • reduced incident-related delays with improved on-time performance
  • reduced exposure to secondary accidents
  • improved overall operational efficiencies

In addition, almost all system participants recommended that additional “value-added” services be incorporated into any future system. Recommended functions included:

  • expanded geography for traffic information (additional metropolitan areas)
  • current and forecasted route-specific weather conditions
  • locations and mapping for truck stop & rest stop facilities
  • additional information delivery mechanisms
  • predictive modeling capabilities to enable more dynamic routing decisions

Expected Completion: June 2001

Year 8 Budget: $75,000

OBJECTIVES

To identify and track the collateral improvements in motor carrier operating efficiencies associated with expanded ATIS/CVO information dissemination and decision support capabilities; to examine the potential safety implications of improved delivery of truck rest stop and weather information via ATIS/CVO; and, to examine the perceived value improvements of an expanded ATIS/CVO system.
