PROJECT CODE11a-4B

COMMITTEECommercial Vehicle Operations

YEAR FUNDEDYear 11 - FY 2003

Year 11 Budget:$100,000

STATUSCompleted

DESCRIPTION

This project was undertaken with the expressed interest of furthering safety and security screening within the corridor and, potentially, the nation. The project built on previous study and test efforts in the corridor, both at the state and federal levels, to test and evaluate the use of license plate optical reader technology to screen vehicles.  This effort tested improved reader technologies in three site applications – ramp speed, mainline speed, and mainline speed at mobile/virtual weigh and e-screening sites – to  measure the accuracy rate of new technology, determine the increased rate of vehicle screening, and measure the additional enforcement actions resultant.   Tehcnologies were tested and deployed at a NYS DOT rest area/inspection site on I-90 in Schodack, NY.  The site remains active while NYSDOT continues to test this and other related screening and safety technologies (WIM, traffic count sensors, road/weather).  As the LPR technology has been incorporated into NYSDOT's larger Commercial Vehicle Integration Initiative currently underway, recommendations for improving technology will accompany site statistical reports and analysis prepared by NYSDOT as part of this effort  and provided to the Coalition and others once NYSDOT's longer-term efforts are completed.
